The past few years have witnessed a steady deterioration in various climate indicators (especially global temperatures, carbon emissions, biodiversity loss and so on), which are already impacting daily lives and livelihoods besides having serious long term implications.
A snapshot of the State of Planet represented by a selection of six Global Climate Indicators is below:
– Global Tree Cover Loss
– Declining Biodiversity
– Air Quality Deterioration
– Rising Carbon Dioxide Emissions
– Global Warming
– Global Sea Ice Loss
All these climate indicators are symptomatic of a fundamental problem which seems to have disturbed the natural equilibrium and has serious implications on the way we all live and work.
There are a few reasons which have triggered the situation into what it is currently. Although this is by no means an exhaustive list, like the Climate Indicators, it provides valuable insights:
– Our current economic models traditionally place a higher value on returns or revenues that can be realised in the short term vis-a-vis the long term.
– With our modern lifestyles and conveniences, all of us have a sizeable carbon footprint. At the moment there are limited offset models available.
– We are running out of Earth! An interesting concept is Earth Overshoot Day – this is the calculated illustrative calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds the Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources for that year.
– If we take a look at the Protectors of forests and natural habitats (for example indigenous peoples, NGOs and conservationists) versus the Consumers of natural resources (which is pretty much all of humanity), there is a vast gap in terms of access to capital, technology, management practices, etc.
In summary, we care about our planet and are concerned about our today. We believe that each one of us has the power to take action and make a difference. Our community of Guardians represents those who want to directly get involved and create the change that they wish to see in the world!
